Sometimes, surrounded by the daily hubbub of Midtown, it's easy to forget Manhattan is an island. New York is home to an extensive ferry system to get you uptown and downtown, as well as across the rivers to Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and New Jersey.
Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry is one of our city's transportation and sightseeing treasures. It's been a municipal service since 1905, and although primarily a commuter route between Staten Island and lower Manhattan, it's also a glorious, 5.2-mile, 20-minute mini-cruise with great views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and lower Manhattan...and it's free!
NY Waterway
NY Waterway (800/53-FERRY) operates commuter ferries between points in Manhattan and New Jersey and boat transportation to Yankee and Shea stadiums in addition to harbor and sightseeing cruises.
New York Water Taxi
New York Water Taxi (212/742-1969) is a comforatble aquatic shuttle from downtown Manhattan to Brooklyn. Hop-on and hop-off scheduled runs include stops at Chelsea Piers on West 23rd Street and the Circle Line at West 42nd Street. Packages are available.
Companies such as Circle Line operate sightseeing cruises, listed under Tours.
SeaStreak
SeaStreak (732/872-2628) offers daily service from New Jersey's Highlands and Atlantic Highlands to Manhattan's Pier 11 Wall Street and East 34th Street. Vessel charters are also available.
Resource
NYC Department of Transportation (212/ or 718/CALL-DOT [212/ or 718/225-5368]) provides in-depth information including schedules about all of NYC's ferry services.
